Civil Servants' Housing at Andrewsganj

Scope of Work: Comprehensive Architectural services

New Delhi

Site Area : 3 Acres

SKDAA are among the five architects (Ravindra Bhan, Vasant & Revathi Kamath, Gautam Bhatia, Design development wing-HUDCO) who were commissioned through a selection process.

This 100 apartments quarter meant as rental housing for senior civil servants is the first ever attempt in Delhi to replace the housing typologies that had never changed since independence.
The fabric and built form draw upon the climatic merits of the old medieval city of Delhi. Tightly packed, modulated scale, of varying heights, providing both sun and shade and inducing microclimatic conditions. Equally incorporating contemporary needs and demands of vehicle ownership, parking, modernized contemporary services and systems.

The quarter is structured with the juxtaposition of a pedestrian spine and a perpendicular elevated podium with car parking underneath. Streets, squares, lanes and alleys offer a variety of compositions and dynamic routes. A typological dwelling block is transformed with each repetition to offer variation in response to immediate specific contexts modifying or circumventing the standard geometric progression. The idea underlying this is that housing need not strictly follow a mechanistic model or “corporatized” repetition. The whole is maintained without sacrificing the self. Thus, a thematic framework is ably supported by purposeful variations.

The long period of several years attended ideological principles and design refinement that would finally produce a granular, finely textured housing inhaling the principles of urban design and city making.
